Dimensional Clearances & System Configuration

What vertical clearance is recommended from the top of a loaded pallet to the underside of the beam above?

For standard selective pallet rack systems, Steel King Industries, Inc. recommends a minimum vertical lift clearance of 6 inches (152 mm) measured from the highest point of the palletized load to the underside of the beam level immediately above.

This clearance allows forklift operators sufficient room to raise the pallet free of beam supports and load-bearing wire decking without striking upper beams or dislodging sprinklers. In high-bay facilities or applications involving automated reach trucks with camera assist, 4 to 6 inches may be evaluated, but 6 inches remains the gold standard for collision prevention and structural safety.

What horizontal clearance should be allowed between pallets left-to-right on beams?

The standard recommended horizontal clearance in selective pallet rack applications is 4 to 6 inches (100 to 150 mm) between adjacent pallets, as well as between end pallets and adjacent upright column posts.

Crucially, calculations must account for the actual load profile rather than the pallet footprint alone. If cartons or stretch wrapping overhang the pallet edges, the required 4- to 6-inch clearance must be maintained between the outermost points of the product to prevent snagging and damage during rack entry and exit.

With a standard 48-inch deep pallet, what is the recommended upright frame depth?

A 42-inch deep upright frame is the recognized engineering standard when storing standard 48-inch deep pallets in selective pallet racking.

This frame depth provides a consistent 3-inch overhang at both the front and rear beam edges. This intentional overhang ensures the pallet's bottom boards bear securely across the front and rear step beams, properly distributing weight over both structural members while keeping the pallet centered and stable under full dynamic placement conditions.

Mechanical Installation & Structural Integrity

On SK2000 tubular pallet rack, should floor anchors be installed in both holes of each baseplate?

No. Only one anchor bolt should be installed per baseplate under standard engineering criteria. The standard F01 baseplate supplied on SK2000 closed-tubular uprights features two offset holes specifically provided to give field installers an alternate location if the initial drill hole strikes rebar embedded within the concrete floor slab.

Critical Engineering Note: Drilling and inserting anchor bolts into both holes in close proximity can create severe concrete stress-cone overlap, cracking the slab and diminishing overall pullout capacity. Anchors must be spaced according to anchor manufacturer and structural engineer-of-record guidelines.

Does SK2000 boltless tubular racking require special tools to lock beams into uprights?

No specialized tools or mechanical fasteners are required to connect SK2000 beams to upright frames. Each beam end-connector is equipped with an integrated, heavy-duty self-engaging spring lock.

As the beam connector studs seat completely into the tapered teardrop columns of the upright frame, the safety pin snaps securely into position automatically. Visual inspection confirms the pin is engaged, guarding against accidental upward dislodgement from forklift contact without requiring hand-tools or loose hardware.

Is SK2000 racking interchangeable with racking components from other manufacturers?

Steel King Industries, Inc. strictly advises against intermixing our components with racking produced by other manufacturers.

Although some competitive systems utilize teardrop hole patterns, steel metallurgical yield strengths, connector gauge tolerances, beam hook geometries, and safety lock configurations vary widely. Mixing mismatched components invalidates published capacity ratings, voids manufacturer warranties, and compromises compliance with ANSI/RMI MH16.1 specifications and local seismic building codes.

Can Steel King industrial racking be installed outdoors?

Yes, Steel King racking can be installed in outdoor yard applications, provided specific engineering and civil site criteria are fulfilled prior to installation:

  • Environmental Load Engineering: Wind exposure, site-specific wind turbulence, and maximum regional ground snow loads must be calculated by our engineering staff into upright and beam capacity equations.
  • Foundation slab: Outdoor installations require a properly engineered exterior concrete pad capable of handling anchor tension and seismic overturning forces.
  • Protective Finishing: Systems installed outside require heavy-duty hot-dip galvanizing to protect structural steel against rain, ice, thermal cycling, and ultraviolet degradation.

Manufacturing, Finishes & Logistics

Where is Steel King Industries, Inc. located and where do orders ship from?

The corporate headquarters of Steel King Industries, Inc. is located in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, USA.

All made-to-order structural and tubular racking, industrial platforms, and custom shipping racks are fabricated across three modern domestic manufacturing facilities: Stevens Point, WI, New London, WI, and Rome, GA. Additionally, we operate a centralized master stocking warehouse in Sauk Village, IL, facilitating expedited freight distribution and Quick Ship fulfillment.

Can your racking systems be hot-dip galvanized for corrosive or outdoor environments?

Yes. Steel King Industries, Inc. provides hot-dip galvanizing across multiple engineered storage lines, including:

  • SK2500 Bolted Tubular Pallet Rack
  • SK3000 Heavy-Duty Structural Channel Pallet Rack
  • SK4000 Tubular Structural Pallet Rack
  • I-Beam Cantilever Outdoor & Yard Racking

Hot-dip galvanizing coats both exterior and interior surfaces of open and structural sections with zinc metallurgical bonding, making them the preferred choice for blast freezers, cold-storage distribution centers, chemical storage facilities, and exposed outdoor yards.

Does Steel King Industries, Inc. manufacture wire mesh decking?

Steel King Industries, Inc. specializes exclusively in the primary engineering, fabrication, and finishing of steel racking structures, work platforms, safety guarding, and industrial containers.

We do not manufacture wire mesh decking in-house; however, we work closely with North America's leading certified wire mesh manufacturers. We specify, coordinate, and supply certified wire decking as an integrated, single-invoice solution bundled directly with your pallet rack order.

What are current manufacturing lead times and how are they tracked?

Manufacturing lead times fluctuate dynamically depending on raw steel mill schedules, project scale, custom roll-forming requirements, and specialty finishing options such as hot-dip galvanizing.
